Grenfell, Saskatchewan
Residents and officials from the Town of Grenfell gathered today to celebrate the completion of upgrades to the local groundwater supply and treatment plant. To mark the opening of the upgraded facility the Town hosted an open house with public tours of the water treatment plant.
Improvements to the groundwater supply and treatment system were completed thanks to accelerated funding from Canada’s Economic Action Plan through the Building Canada Fund - Communities Component.
"I am pleased that our Government has delivered on this commitment for Grenfell residents, which has not only created jobs and stimulated the local economy, but also has helped meet a very specific need of the community of Grenfell," said Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris – Moose Mountain, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "This upgraded facility is more reliable and efficient, and provides improved water quality for the community."
"Projects like this one improve the quality of life and allow our communities to contribute to the Saskatchewan Advantage," MLA Don Toth said on behalf of Municipal Affairs Minister Darryl Hickie. "Our government has committed more than $4.5 billion to Saskatchewan’s highways, roads, schools, hospitals and municipal infrastructure over the last five years. This investment in Grenfell ensures critical services the community depends on are in place and that is something we can all be proud of."
The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan each invested $381,333 to the project that will improve the quality of drinking water, eliminate the need for water softeners, and increase the reliability and efficiency of plant operations and water distribution. The Town of Grenfell contributed the balance for a total project cost of $1,440,000.
"Potable water is critical to any community’s survival," Grenfell Mayor Marc Saleski said. "With water regulations tightening, this was an important project for Grenfell and the residents are really happy with the improved quality of their water."
Under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund (BCF), the Government of Canada has invested in important projects across the West with matching contributions from the western provinces. Thousands of Saskatchewan residents across the province are now enjoying the benefits of this significant investment to Canada and Saskatchewan’s public infrastructure.
