OTTAWA, April 18, 2012 - The public warning issued on March 19, 2012 has been rescinded.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is now advising the public that the BioX brand Xtreme Power Whey Isolate powder and Protein Shot Recovery Blue Raspberry drink products described below do not contain egg. As such, these products do not represent a risk to individuals allergic to egg.
The CFIA is canceling this allergy alert based on the fact that the allergen test kit used gave false positive results for egg in these two products which were made from whey protein. While not common, false positive results are possible when testing some products. In this case, a rare and little known chemical reaction between ingredients in the product is what gave the original false results. The CFIA's own testing has confirmed the false positive results and verified that the product is free from egg.
These products are known to be distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. However, they may have been distributed nationally.
There have been no reported allergic reactions associated with the consumption of these products.
For more information consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).
