Danville, Quebec, May 25, 2012 – Acting on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Quebec Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, Yvon Vallières, Minister responsible for Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs and the Canadian Francophonie, Minister responsible for the Reform of Democratic Institutions and Access to Information, and Member of the Quebec National Assembly for Richmond, today announced that Club de curling de Danville Inc. will receive $80,000 in joint government funding under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec for the replacement of mechanical equipment on the club’s refrigeration system. The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, who was unable to be present for the announcement, expressed his delight that this project will be carried out.
“The Government of Canada didn’t hesitate to support this project of the Danville curling club, which will help enhance the quality of life of Richmond residents by giving them access to a modern and safe place for the practice of their favourite recreational activities,” commented Minister Lebel.
The project submitted by Club de curling de Danville Inc. involves renovating the existing facility, notably by replacing the club’s ice cooling system and rebuilding the concrete surface. The Danville club is the only curling rink in the Regional County Municipality of Des Sources.
“By supporting this project, the Government of Quebec is showing proof of its commitment to improving community infrastructure in a tangible and sustainable way. Our government is taking steps to leave Quebec municipalities a legacy of quality infrastructure, an indispensible tool for rising to the challenges of the future. Thanks to the execution of this renovation work, the Danville curling club will be in a position to offer multigenerational users a quality ice surface and an adequate facility for the practice of this sport. This is yet another opportunity to rediscover the pleasures of staying active and leading a healthy lifestyle,” said Minister Yvon Vallières.
Completion of this initiative will necessitate a total investment of $160,000 established on the basis of the project’s eligible costs. The governments of Quebec and Canada will each contribute $40,000, for a combined government investment of $80,000, while the Club de curling de Danville Inc., for its part, will invest $80,000 in the project.
The Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec is a cost-sharing initiative aimed at funding infrastructure projects in communities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. These communities are thus able to use this assistance to build or modernize infrastructure in major need of revitalization, including water treatment plants, water supply systems and cultural and sports centres.
The funding from the Government of Canada for this project was awarded through Canada’s Economic Action Plan. To learn more about this plan, visit www.actionplan.gc.ca.
