Today, during Centennial Anniversary Celebrations, residents of Edam gathered to mark the grand opening and dedication of the Village’s upgraded community centre.
Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Larry Doke, MLA for Cut Knife-Turtleford, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Reiter, Minister of Government Relations, were pleased to join their friends, neighbours and constituents at this important community event.
The Village of Edam received funding under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program through Canada’s Economic Action Plan to join the existing curling and skating waiting rooms under one roof. This improvement provides a facility of sufficient size for the community’s needs.
"Congratulations to the Village of Edam on the completion of the twinning of the hockey and curling arenas," said Minister Ritz. "Our Government is proud of this investment which has created jobs and growth locally, while improving the quality of life for the citizens of Edam and the surrounding area."
Through RInC, the Government of Canada invested $500,000, the Government of Saskatchewan contributed $600,000, and the community provided the balance of the funding for a total project cost of approximately $2 million.
"The improvements to the Edam Community Centre will ensure everyone can take part in a healthy active lifestyle," MLA Doke said on behalf of Government Relations Minister Reiter. "Recreational infrastructure is often the hub of activity in our local communities and we are pleased to be contributing to the Saskatchewan Advantage through these investments."
The revitalized community centre will accommodate structured physical and recreational activities for all age groups. RInC funding went towards upgrading the foundation, improving heating and electrical systems, rehabilitating and expanding the existing curling rink, improving the energy efficiency of the facility, and constructing a large multi-use facility to join the skating and curling arenas with a joint waiting room, washroom and kitchen facility.
"This ‘new’ Community Centre is not only our Recreation Centre, it is our Community Hall and Emergency/Disaster Centre. With a generator capable of supplying full power to the entire facility, we can house and feed displaced residents in the time of emergency," said Larry McDaid, Edam Mayor. "We are very grateful for the Federal and Provincial grants, as well as the support of the R.M. of Turtle River and particularly the countless people who volunteered time and pledges financial support."
