Ottawa – An INTERPOL General Secretariat operation began on May 14th, 2012, and will continue until July 20, 2012, aimed at locating international fugitives wanted for crimes that include murder, kidnapping and drug trafficking. INTERPOL Ottawa is calling on Canadians to assist in this operation in order to bring these fugitives to justice.
Operation Infra-Red (International Fugitive Round Up and Arrest – Red Notices) 2012 is a global operation that targets more than 500 individuals wanted by 57 member countries and has already led to the arrest or location of international fugitives. Operation Infra-Red aims to promote the international sharing of information pertaining to the whereabouts of fugitives that have left their national jurisdiction.
“Assistance from the public is often paramount when it comes to locating international fugitives. A perfect example of this is the Luka Rocco Magnotta case. He was identified by a member of the public in Berlin, Germany just four days after INTERPOL Ottawa had requested a Red Notice in order to locate him.” said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Inspector Glenn Martindale, Director of INTERPOL Ottawa. “Building strong relationships with the people of Canada is fundamental to our success. Operation Infra-Red is an opportunity for Canadians, the RCMP and our law enforcement partners to work together to make our citizens safer at home and abroad.”
As part of a public appeal for assistance a number of Infra-Red 2012 targets wanted for various offences are being highlighted. INTERPOL Ottawa urges Canadians to look closely at the photos of these wanted individuals to see if they have met them either in person or on a social media networking site.
Operation Infra-Red 2009 was the pilot operation that began this initiative. Since that time there have been four similar Infra operations that have led to 120 arrests and 170 positive locations. To view the individuals targeted in Operation Infra-Red 2012 please visit www.interpol.net
