Clearwater, Manitoba, July 3, 2012 – Important water treatment plant upgrades have been completed that will benefit Clearwater residents in the Rural Municipality of Louise. Federal and municipal officials were on hand today to celebrate the completion of this important work made possible through a partnership between the three levels of government.
“Canada’s Economic Action Plan has created jobs and delivered results to communities across Manitoba and all over the country,” said Candice Hoeppner, MP for Portage–Lisgar, on behalf of the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport). “This work will ensure that Clearwater residents can continue to enjoy a healthy environment and clean water for years to come.”
The expanded and modernized plant provides town residents with improved and safer drinking water, rural residents with a backup potable water source, and Clearwater with the necessary water infrastructure for future growth.
“A reliable supply of clean water is important to the health of residents and plays a valuable role in attracting business opportunities in all Manitoba communities,” said Ron Lemieux, Minister of Local Government. “The Province of Manitoba is committed to promoting economic growth in our rural areas by investing in important infrastructure like the upgrades to the water-treatment facility here in Clearwater. Projects like this support and encourage residential stability, help attract business development and create more economic benefits for the families that live and work in our rural communities."
"The upgrades to this water treatment facility will provide the community with potable water that will meet the required standards into the future and help Clearwater move forward," said Ken Buchanan, Reeve of the RM of Louise. "The LUD of Clearwater is proud to showcase this new potable water reverse osmosis process brought into operation and would like thank both the Federal and Provincial governments for participating with our community in bringing the project to completion."
Under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, the governments of Canada and Manitoba each committed $78,163 toward the Clearwater water treatment plant upgrade, with the municipality providing the balance of funding. Total eligible project costs are $234,419.
As part of the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund supported more than 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country. Together, the federal government and Province of Manitoba committed close to $280 million to 111 projects under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund across Manitoba.
Investing in infrastructure is a key part of the Government of Canada’s plan to create jobs, generate economic growth and ensure long-term prosperity. Over the course of the summer, the Government of Canada is engaging provinces, territories and stakeholders in a series of roundtables to develop a new long-term infrastructure plan. This plan will focus on investments that support job creation and economic growth, while building strong, prosperous communities across the country. In addition, the Government of Canada will hold a roundtable with national stakeholders and representatives of the private sector at the end of the summer. Working together to develop this plan will provide new opportunities for all orders of government and the private sector to build partnerships to improve public infrastructure in Canada.
