BATOCHE, SASKATCHEWAN (July 20, 2012) - The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, released the following statement today following his attendance at the opening ceremonies of the Back to Batoche Days:
"I am honoured to be here today with Métis leadership and Métis people from across Canada to celebrate the 127th anniversary of the historic Battle of Batoche. This is an opportunity to commemorate the rich contributions Métis people have made, and continue to make, to Canada’s culture and history.
Back to Batoche honours the culture, traditions, and heritage of Métis people. For 42 years, Métis people have travelled back to Batoche to take part in this celebration enjoyed by Métis people across North America.
The Harper Government continues to work in partnership with Métis associations to address the priorities set out in the Métis Nation Protocol, and to improve the quality of life outcomes for Canada’s Métis peoples."
