Prime Minister Stephen Harper today congratulated Derek Drouin on his bronze medal in the men’s high jump at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. This is Canada’s first Olympic high jump medal since 1976.
“Canadians everywhere stood proudly today as Derek Drouin represented Canada on the podium with a bronze medal win in the men’s high jump,” said the Prime Minister. “This is an incredible achievement, and it highlights Mr. Drouin’s dedication to excellence in his sport.”
Derek Drouin was born in Sarnia, Ontario, and resides in Corunna, Ontario. This is Mr. Drouin’s first Olympic Games, and first Olympic medal. In 2012, he won the Canadian National Championship in the high jump event. Mr. Drouin is a three-time National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) high jump champion, dominating U.S. college athletics for four years at Indiana University.
The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are being held from July 27 to August 12 in London, United Kingdom. Canada is being represented by more than 275 athletes who are competing in a 26 sport program scheduled around London. More than 10,500 athletes, coaches and team officials from at least 200 countries are participating in these Summer Olympic Games.
