SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN (August 26, 2012) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, released the following statement today following the Native Women's Association's Annual General Meeting and Election:
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate Michèle Audette on her election as President of the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC). I look forward to working with her over the course of her mandate.
The Government of Canada values its relationship with NWAC and the contributions they make on behalf of their members. NWAC has played an important role on many issues, including consultation and collaboration on the development of Bill S-2, the Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Act. Through their dedication and effort, they are playing a key role in ensuring that the voices of Aboriginal women continue to be heard.
The Government of Canada will continue to work in partnership with Native Women's Association of Canada to advance the well-being and economic prosperity of Aboriginal women and their communities."
