BAY BULLS, NL - The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, and Senator Fabian Manning on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, officially opened the newly reconstructed Small Craft Harbours’ wharf in Bay Bulls, Newfoundland and Labrador.
“We are proud that our government could help this community by reconstructing the Bay Bulls harbour after it was damaged by storms,” said Minister Flaherty. "Harbours like this are the lifeblood of many communities across the country, supporting the economy and jobs in rural areas."
The Small Craft Harbours wharf reconstruction project at Bay Bulls was completed at a cost of $3.8 million and was funded through the $71.6M emergency assistance invested by the Harper government to clean-up and repair the damaged marine infrastructure after a number of severe storms hit Atlantic Canada and elsewhere in 2010.
The project involved demolition and removal of the damaged wharf, construction of a new treated timber crib wharf complete with armour stone protection on the seaward side, installation of new electrical infrastructure, improvements to site grading, the installation of asphalt and concrete toppings.
“The reconstruction of the Small Craft Harbours’ wharf in Bay Bulls is an important investment into the growing economy of the community and surrounding area," said Senator Manning. "I would like to commend the Harbour Authority of Bay Bulls for their dedication and commitment to their community.”
“The newly constructed wharf in Bay Bulls is an asset for harbour users and the town. It is a revenue generator for the Harbour Authority and the entire region,” said Don Drew, President of the Harbour Authority at Bay Bulls. “The wharf is home to local and transient fishing vessels of all sizes and provides shelter to the town’s tour boats and recreational boaters.”
Repair and improvement projects are undertaken at harbours across the country by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for local users. Close cooperation allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishermen.
