Government of Canada funding helps improve local infrastructure
Embree, Newfoundland and Labrador, September 7, 2012 – Embree residents will soon benefit from additional upgrades to Church Road, thanks to Canada's Gas Tax Fund.

said Pierre Poilievre, MP and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "We will continue to support the Town of Embree and local governments throughout Newfoundland and Labrador in their efforts to improve roads and strengthen local infrastructure."

This project involved digging culverts and applying gravel to a 350-metre stretch of Church Road, with a new asphalt surface to be applied in the upcoming weeks. A smoother road surface will help improve safety and transportation efficiency for commuters and local residents.
The Town of Embree directed approximately $70,000 of its federal Gas Tax Fund allocation toward the total eligible project cost.
Canada's Gas Tax Fund provides stable, long-term funding to local governments to help them build and revitalize public infrastructure. In December 2011, the Government of Canada passed legislation to make the Gas Tax Fund a permanent annual investment of $2 billion per year. The Government of Canada, through the Gas Tax Fund alone, provides more than $31 million in funding annually for municipal infrastructure in Newfoundland and Labrador. Between 2010 and 2014, the Town of Embree will receive $146,464 from Canada's Gas Tax Fund.
Investing in infrastructure is a key part of the Government of Canada's plan for jobs, growth and long-term prosperity. To develop a new long-term infrastructure plan, the Government of Canada is working with provinces, territories, municipalities through municipal associations and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, as well as other key stakeholders in a series of roundtables. This plan will focus on investments that support job creation and economic growth, while building strong, prosperous communities across the country. Working together to develop this plan will provide new opportunities for all orders of government and the private sector to build partnerships to improve public infrastructure in Canada.
