Households now have access to improved drinking water
Spiritwood, Saskatchewan, September 19, 2012 - Residents and elected officials from the Town of Spiritwood gathered today to celebrate upgrades to the Town's water treatment plant. This project will improve the quality of the Town's drinking water, eliminating the need for water softeners, and increase the plant's reliability and efficiency.
"The Government of Canada is proud to have supported this important work, which will provide Spiritwood residents with cleaner and safer water for years to come,"
said Rob Clarke, Member of Parliament for Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River, on behalf of the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport). "We believe that investing in infrastructure is one of the best ways to create jobs and strengthen communities; from coast to coast to coast, communities like Spiritwood are benefitting from our infrastructure investments."
The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan each contributed $252,066, through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, towards the total eligible costs of $756,200 for the water treatment plant upgrades. The Town of Spiritwood contributed the remaining balance of the total project costs of $853,222. The Town will also receive interest subsidies for up to five years for $330,000 of borrowing under the provincial Saskatchewan Infrastructure Growth Initiative (SIGI) Program.
"We are pleased to support projects like the Spiritwood water treatment plant,"
said MLA Scott Moe, MLA for Rosthern-Shellbrook, on behalf of Jim Reiter, Minister of Government Relations for Saskatchewan. "Projects like this one improve our quality of life and help to ensure we have the local infrastructure required to support our province's growth."
"One should never take for granted the supply of abundant safe drinking water,"
said Gary Von Holwede, Mayor of Spiritwood. "Our community understands this and we have addressed this issue head on with our new reverse osmosis water treatment facility."
Investing in infrastructure is a key part of the Government of Canada's plan to create jobs, promote growth and ensure long-term prosperity. To develop a new long-term infrastructure plan for beyond 2014, the Government of Canada is working with provinces, territories, municipalities through municipal associations and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, as well as other key stakeholders in a series of roundtables. This plan will focus on investments that support job creation and economic growth, while building strong, prosperous communities across the country. Working together to develop this plan will provide new opportunities for all orders of government and the private sector to build partnerships to improve public infrastructure in Canada.
