Ottawa, October 10, 2012 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, and the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement after an announcement by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that Alberta obtained its first conviction in a human trafficking and human smuggling investigation. Kihew Energy Services Ltd. (Kihew), an Alberta based company, plead guilty to charges under section 117 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, resulting in a $215,000 fine.
“We congratulate the RCMP on this important conviction. It is critical that foreign workers come to Canada through legal channels and under the appropriate labour conditions. This conviction demonstrates that Canada will not tolerate those seeking financial gain through the despicable crime of human smuggling.”
