OTTAWA, ONTARIO (October 19, 2012) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, today released the following statement following the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples National General Assembly and Election:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate Betty Ann Lavallée on her re-election as National Chief of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP).
The Government of Canada values its relationship with CAP and its contributions to enhancing the social and economic participation of the Métis, non-status Indians and the urban Aboriginal population. This effort continues to advance the issues that matter the most to the people it represents. I would also like to commend CAP on its support for the new Matrimonial Real Property Legislation, which elevates the pride of Aboriginal peoples in Canada.
The Government of Canada will continue to work with CAP as it advances its New Path Forward: Strengthening economic outcomes, and enhancing education and good governance practices.”
