OTTAWA, ONTARIO (November 28, 2012) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, today announced the reappointments of William McCue and Ann Shaw as Commissioners to the First Nations Tax Commission (FNTC).
“I would like to congratulate Mr. McCue and Ms. Shaw on their reappointments as commissioners at the FNTC,” said Minister Duncan. “Working together, we will continue to support economic development projects on First Nation lands, improve investor confidence and provide an increased level of accountability and transparency in First Nation communities.”
The FNTC’s mandate is to support and regulate First Nation property tax regimes to ensure they are administratively efficient, harmonized with property tax regimes across Canada, and fair to on-reserve taxpayers.
The FNTC was one of the four institutions created through the First Nations Fiscal and Statistical Management Act, which came into force on April 1, 2006. The Act, a First Nation-led initiative, established an institutional framework to provide First Nation governments with the practical tools available to other levels of government for modern fiscal management.
The tools available through the institutions, including independent financial management assessment service and a bond financing regime, support good government, economic growth and help improve the quality of life on reserves.
