Today, Joyce Bateman, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Waverley Soccer Complex under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities,” said MP Bateman. “The improvements to the Waverley Soccer Complex will help to boost economic activity while promoting health and wellness in our community.”
This outdoor facility hosts approximately 1200 soccer league games each season, in addition to provincial and national tournaments. Federal funding of $21,033 will allow the facility to extend its season each year, by increasing the comfort and safety for spectators and players by replacing the grandstand boards and adding four bench shelters to existing fields.
“The funding from WD will go a long way to assisting the Winnipeg Soccer Federation in giving the Winnipeg Soccer Complex a much needed face lift; as well as adding to the players’ amenities with sheltered benches,
” said Devon Kashton, General Manager of the Winnipeg Soccer Federation. “The timing couldn’t be better, as Winnipeg hosted the Senior Club Nationals this past October and are preparing for the upcoming Women’s World Cup in 2015.
”
CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
