Ref. #2-3734
OTTAWA, ONTARIO (November 15, 2012) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, issued the following statement today:
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Jim Sinclair who lost his battle with cancer on Friday, November 9, 2012.
Mr. Sinclair was a tireless champion for Aboriginal rights on the national and international stage, and is widely known for his efforts to have the Métis recognized at the table during the First Ministers' Constitutional talks in the 1980s. Throughout his life he played a key role in establishing and leading several Métis and Indian Institutions, including the Métis National Council, and the Native Council of Canada, now known as the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples.
In honour of his work and dedication, Mr. Sinclair was awarded the Order of the Métis Nation in 2004 for a lifetime of service. On October 25, 2012, he was honoured by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations at its Annual Assembly for his distinguished 50 years of service and contribution to the Aboriginal community.
Jim Sinclair was a great leader whose dedication and commitment will be remembered by all of us."
