OTTAWA — The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment of Mr. Jim Durrell to the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited for a three year term.
"I am very pleased Mr. Durrell has agreed to serve on the board of the Federal Bridge Corporation," said Minister Lebel. "He brings to the table a blend of strong management and business acumen with wide ranging and impressive achievements in municipal and community affairs."
Mr. Durrell is president and owner of Capital Dodge Chrysler Jeep Fiat, an automobile dealership in Ottawa that he has run since 2000. Prior to this, Mr. Durrell qualified as a chartered life underwriter and held a series of managerial positions at London Life Insurance Company in Montreal over a period of 17 years.
During his career Mr. Durrell has held a number of executive positions in the Ottawa-Carleton municipality, notably as president of the Ottawa Roughrider Football Club in 1996 and president of Ottawa Senators hockey team from 1990-1992. He also contributed to a wide range of community- building activities, not only in the field of sports but also with business, not-for profit and charitable organizations. In 2011, Mr. Durrell was the first recipient of the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the city and has received the inaugural Order of Ottawa.
As a Crown corporation, the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) and its subsidiaries—Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated, Seaway International Bridge Corporation Ltd., and St. Mary's River Bridge Company—together own, manage and operate several significant bridges in Ontario and Quebec. Each year, over 148 million vehicles and more than $67 billion worth of merchandise use FBCL structures, making them among the busiest in North America. These structures play a vital role in connecting Canada's transportation and economic network with the world.
