Funding will help local area gymnastics club expand sport programming and meet current and future demands
Spruce Grove, Alberta, December 7, 2012 – Thanks to a funding partnership between the federal and provincial governments, the Aerials Gymnastics Club as well as the community in Spruce Grove will be able to benefit from a brand new gymnastics facility.
"Our Government is focused on what matters to Canadians – jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity,"
said the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, Minister for Status of Women and Member of Parliament for Edmonton–Spruce Grove. "Infrastructure projects like this one boost our local economy, create jobs and improve the quality of life for everyone in our community."
"Strong communities are built through the power of partnerships, with local organizations working together with community leaders and government to meet the needs of citizens,"
said Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Alberta Culture. "We are proud to join the Government of Canada, the City of Spruce Grove and the Aerials Gymnastics club in making this facility a reality for the benefit of youth and families in Spruce Grove and communities throughout the region."
"We are grateful for the interest and support of both our federal and provincial governments in this project,"
said Stuart Houston, Mayor of the City of Spruce Grove. "Partnerships at the local, provincial and federal levels play an integral role in building vibrant sustainable communities. The announced funding adds to a broad community development vision that enhances our quality of life making Spruce Grove the community of choice."
"The Aerials appreciate the work that the City is doing to partner with us in planning this facility,"
said Lindsay Kiezik, First Vice-President of the Aerials Gymnastics Club. "It is nice to see that the sport of gymnastics is being seen as a value to the community and supported by the Province of Alberta and the Government of Canada."
This Provincial-Territorial Base Fund initiative includes the construction of a new gymnastics facility as part of the Tri-Village Commons development, which will provide a space for regional and national competitive gymnastics events and allow the Aerials Gymnastics Club to expand its programming to meet current and future demand in this sport.
Through the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund, the governments of Canada and Alberta are jointly investing $1 million toward the initiative. The total eligible costs for the initiative are $6.8 million.
Alberta will receive a total of $175 million from the Government of Canada, through the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund, for core infrastructure priorities such as building safer roads, highways and cultural infrastructure.
The Government of Canada has engaged provinces, territories, municipalities and key stakeholders in a series of roundtables to guide the development of a new long-term infrastructure plan that will support job creation, economic growth and prosperity. We understand that we are on the right track: there is a need for strong, sustained investment and we must continue to work together moving forward. To improve infrastructure across Canada and ensure affordability and sustainability over the long term, our new plan will encourage greater use of public-private partnerships. This will help leverage new investments in infrastructure, while respecting Canadian taxpayers' ability to pay.
