Winnipeg, Manitoba – Today, the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport) and Member of Parliament for Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Charleswood Curling Club under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“For over 60 years, people of all ages have gathered at the Charleswood Curling Club to enjoy the game of curling,
” said Minister Fletcher. “I am proud that our Government’s investment will create jobs and economic growth in our community, while allowing the club to continue to serve residents well into the future.
”
The Harper Government’s investment of $62,800 will enhance the services provided by the curling club and will help create jobs. This investment will go towards replacing the roof and improving the ice refrigeration system at the curling club. The improvements will help the club maintain the ice quality and operating standard required to host regional events and continue to thrive.
“The Charleswood Curling Club is a well-used aging facility, with approximately 800 members starting from age 7 in the Little Rocks program to our very active Seniors and Masters leagues,
” said Jane Howe, Club Treasurer. “The Club is also used by a number of schools to support their physical education and sports programs. Like most community organizations, we have a very lean budget and break even in good years, so major repairs are difficult to finance. The funding under WD’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund is the cornerstone of our fundraising drive to replace the roof and the header piping for the ice refrigeration system. We are truly pleased, and thankful for this Federal contribution.
”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
