Today, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, together with the Honourable Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Laurier Heights Community League Park and Recreation Centre under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“Our Government is pleased to support infrastructure projects across the country like the Laurier Heights Community League revitalization project,
” said MP Hawn. “By investing in local infrastructure, we are helping to support job creation, boosting economic activity, as well as creating safe and accessible community facilities for years to come.
”
The Harper Government’s investment of $191,460 will support a number of improvements to the Laurier Heights Community League Park and Recreation Centre including the installation of emergency and security lighting, paving of concrete walkways and the addition of a curb ramp. Further renovations will be made to the roof and furnaces in the hockey skate change hall. These improvements will help ensure that residents and visitors can continue to enjoy this valued community facility for years to come.
“The Laurier Heights Community League is extremely honoured to have received funding from the Federal Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund,
” said Rob Hennigar, President of the Laurier Heights Community League. “Through the support of this program, our goal of expanding our community recreation centre has moved one step closer towards success. With preliminary work scheduled to commence this spring, the many years of tireless effort put forth by our numerous volunteers will begin the transformation to this centerpiece of our community. Our new facility will allow residents to gather and connect in ways never before possible, further encouraging a safe, friendly and active neighbourhood.
”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
