Toronto, Ontario, February 13, 2013—The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, met yesterday with members of the Canadian Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) to discuss workplace diversity and occupational health and safety.
“In Canada, we depend on the skills of our workers, both women and men, to increase our country’s productivity and economic competitiveness and we encourage employers to take full advantage of this diverse workforce,” she said.
She also commended the effort of the Council and other mining industry stakeholders for their role in ensuring the health and safety of workers. “Everyone, employers, employees and governments have a role to play when it comes to promoting safe and healthy workplaces across Canada. All Canadians, no matter where they work or in what field they specialize, should be able to return home safe and sound after their workday.”
Created in 2008, the CMIC’s mandate is to make Canada's mining industry among the most innovative and successful in the world. The council works toward enhancing the competitiveness of a responsible Canadian mining industry through collaboration and alignment of resources in education, research, innovation, and commercialization.
The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health, safety and employment standards for federally regulated workers and employers, and the Employment Equity Act.
