Calgary, Alberta – Today, Joan Crockatt, Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Marda Loop Communities Association's outdoor rink under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"Our Government is pleased today to announce its support for the Marda Loop Communities Association's outdoor hockey rink in Calgary," said MP Crockatt. "As one of the largest groups of communities in Calgary, with an ever increasing population, this infrastructure improvement will benefit recreational enthusiasts for years to come."
The Harper Government's investment of $62,530 will support upgrades to the Marda Loop Communities Association's outdoor rink through the installation of new boards, players' boxes, fencing and lighting. These improvements will extend the life-span of the rink and ensure the ongoing availability of programs and services for residents and visitors.
"We at the Marda Loop Communities Association would like to thank the Government of Canada for investing in the enhancement of our community," said Marc Doll, President of the Marda Loop Communities Association. "With the return of a fully functional outdoor rink and revitalizing community demographic, we will once again be able to offer programs such as youth outdoor hockey leagues which we have not been able to offer in almost 20 years. This site is sure to be a memory generator for yet another generation of Calgarians. Thank you for helping us achieve this milestone moment in the long history of our Community Association."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
