Calgary, Alberta – Today, Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Calgary East, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Bob Bahan Aquatic and Fitness Centre under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"I am proud to see the City of Calgary benefit from our Government's support for community infrastructure," said MP Obhrai. "This investment will improve the indoor air quality and temperature of the Bob Bahan Aquatic and Fitness Centre for all visitors while creating new economic opportunities."
The Harper Government's investment of $250,000 supports the replacement of the Aquatic and Fitness Centre's roof, as well as five heating, ventilation and air conditioning units in the facility. These improvements will reduce the Centre's energy consumption.
"The City of Calgary Recreation is grateful for this support which will enhance the Aquatic & Fitness Centre's ability to provide quality programs and swimming opportunities for citizens. Investing in infrastructure at our recreation facilities is a top priority for the City and these funds augment our ongoing commitment towards building an active, creative and vibrant city," said Kurt Hanson, Acting General Manager for Community Services & Protective Services with The City of Calgary.
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets.
