Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety and Member of Parliament for Provencher, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Emerson Co-operative Community Centre under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"I am proud to see Emerson benefit from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund," said Minister Toews. "This investment will help create jobs and growth while helping to ensure that an important local resource is available for the community for years to come."
The Harper Government's investment of $60,150 will allow the Emerson Co-operative Community Centre to repair its roof ensuring it is able to continue to provide services to Emerson and surrounding communities, some of which do not have community halls of their own.
"The replacement of the roof will ensure the longevity of the Emerson Co-operative Community Centre building which is contains our Community Hall, Emerson Curling Club, Royal Canadian Legion, as well as a meeting place for local organizations such as Elks, Post Road Heritage Group, and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary," said Jim Becker, treasurer of the Emerson Co-operative Community Centre. "This funding, combined with local fund raising, allows us to proceed with the necessary repairs to maintain the facility as a vital part of our community."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets.
