Today, the Honourable Ted Menzies, Minister of State for Finance and Member of Parliament for Macleod, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Vulcan Curling Club under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"I am proud to see the Town of Vulcan benefit from our Government's support for local infrastructure," said Minister Menzies. "This investment will help create jobs, growth and will support the prosperity of the community for years to come."
The Harper Government's investment of $99,770 supports the installation of a new ice plant for the Vulcan Curling Club, which will also serve the adjacent Vulcan Arena. This energy efficient upgrade will extend the life-span of the Curling Club and Arena facilities, ensuring local residents and visitors can enjoy this recreational hub for years to come.
"The Town of Vulcan is very appreciative of the Federal Government's funding toward the upgrade of the Vulcan and District Curling Club ice plant," said Howard Dirks, Mayor for the Town of Vulcan. "For a Community like Vulcan it becomes more and more difficult to absorb the full cost of maintaining proper recreation facilities for the benefit of not only the Town of Vulcan, but also for the surrounding rural population. This type of support is certainly a great incentive for groups and individuals who volunteer their time to manage these types of facilities, to continue their invaluable involvement."
"On behalf of Vulcan County I would like to express our thanks to the Government of Canada and their Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund," says David Schneider, Reeve of Vulcan County. "With this funding, and contributions from the Provincial Government, Town of Vulcan, other community service clubs and Vulcan County's contribution of Municipal Sponsorship Program funds, we are able collaboratively to support a valuable community resource."
"Avid curlers and volunteers have been the cornerstones to one of Vulcan's most popular winter activity," said Fred Pratt, President of the Vulcan Curling Club. "Youth, adult and seniors all participate, compete and learn more about the game. Our on-going planned renovation will be complete with this Community Infrastructure funding and we look forward to many years of community participation."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defense industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
