Winnipeg, Manitoba – Today, Lawrence Toet, Member of Parliament for Elmwood—Transcona, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the South Transcona Community Centre under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"I am proud to see organizations like the South Transcona Community Club benefit from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund," said MP Toet. "This investment will help create jobs, growth and will support expanded services to our residents for years to come."
With the Harper Government's investment of $60,150, the ice rink at the South Transcona Community Centre will be leveled and re-asphalted. In addition, the path adjacent to the rink will be repaired.
"We are pleased to receive the support of the Government of Canada so that we can upgrade our rink," said Linda Oakley, President of the South Transcona Community Centre. "Our Community Centre, especially the rink, is a busy place, with hockey, ringette and skating in the winter, ball hockey in the spring, and a number of community events all year round. The Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund investment will make is possible for us improve our facility as well as the experience of the people who come here."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
