Today, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, Minister for Status of Women and Member of Parliament for Edmonton—Spruce Grove, announced support for upgrades to the Jamie Platz Family YMCA in Edmonton under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“Facilities like the Jamie Platz Family YMCA provide Canadians with valuable recreational opportunities, which promote healthy lifestyles,
” said Minister Ambrose. “By investing in improvements to local infrastructure across the country, our Government continues to support communities, create jobs and boost economic growth.
”
The Harper Government’s investment of $250,000 will support renovations to the Jamie Platz Family YMCA’s aquatic facility, including repairs to two swimming pools, as well as the replacement of windows, lighting and signage. These improvements will extend the lifespan of the facility and ensure the continued delivery of aquatic activities and services.
“Strong families are at the heart of strong communities and helping to support the upgrades at the Jamie Platz Family YMCA is one of the ways we are working to build Alberta,
” said Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk. “We are proud to join YMCA of Edmonton and the Government of Canada by providing a Community Facility Enhancement Program grant of $80,000.
”
“The YMCA of Northern Alberta (formerly YMCA of Edmonton) has been serving thousands of children, youth and families with learn to swim, life saving and recreational programs for 23 years in the pools at the Jamie Platz Family YMCA,
” said Nick Parkinson, President and CEO of the YMCA of Northern Alberta. “Our goal is to continue to meet the community’s needs for healthy child, youth and adult development in a top quality, safe and accessible aquatic environment for many more years. Thanks to the federal government for assisting with the CIIF funding to make this possible.
”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
