Today, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, Minister for Status of Women and Member of Parliament for Edmonton—Spruce Grove, announced support for upgrades to the Monsignor Walter Fitzgerald Park under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“Our Government remains focused on what matters to Canadians – jobs, growth and economic prosperity,
” said Minister Ambrose. “This investment will assist with major improvements to the Monsignor Walter Fitzgerald Park, which will create better recreational opportunities. By investing in projects such as this, our Government is addressing the needs of communities, while also helping to create local jobs and economic growth.
”
The Harper Government’s investment of $250,000 will support the refurbishment of Monsignor Walter Fitzgerald Park, which is located behind St. Martha Catholic Elementary School. Upgrades will include the replacement of the Park’s playground equipment, the installation of concrete furnishings and rubber walking surfaces, and the resurfacing of basketball courts. These enhancements will improve the longevity of the playground, while promoting physical activity among students and youth in the city.
“Helping to ensure that youth have the kind of facilities that encourage an active, healthy lifestyle is one of the ways we are helping to build Alberta,
” said Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk. “We are proud to partner with the St. Martha School Advisory Society, the City of Edmonton and the Government of Canada by providing a Community Facilities Enhancement Program grant of $114,305 to help support upgrades to the Monsignor Walter Fitzgerald Park.
”
"The City of Edmonton is pleased to have supported the Monsignor Walter Fitzgerald Park redevelopment through our Neighbourhood Park Development Program, recognizing that creative and dynamic community spaces are essential to the well-being of our neighbourhoods,
” said his Worship Stephen Mandel, Mayor of Edmonton. “Congratulations to the St. Martha School Advisory Society for their tireless efforts to raise funds for this project which will benefit the entire community of Lymburn, and thank you to the other funding partners who are helping to realize this long-standing dream.
"
“The St. Martha School Advisory Society is extremely grateful to receive this funding from the federal government,
” said Kim Street, President of the St. Martha School Advisory Society. “The government’s commitment to reinvest in this playground translates into an investment in our children, as children in this community will continue their joyful play in a modernized playground.
”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
