Whitecourt, Alberta
Today, the Honourable Rob Merrifield, Member of Parliament for Yellowhead, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for upgrades to Rotary Park under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“I am happy to see the Town of Whitecourt benefit from our Government’s support for community infrastructure,” said MP Merrifield. “By making investments in recreational and tourist destinations such as Rotary Park, we are helping improve the quality of life for Canadians, while also creating jobs and economic growth.”
The Harper Government’s investment of $133,118 will support the extension of Rotary Park’s paved trail system. As a popular outdoor recreational area, this investment will increase the trail’s accessibility and allow both residents and visitors to further explore everything the park has to offer.
“The Town of Whitecourt appreciates the investments the federal government continues to make in our community," said his Worship Trevor Thain, Mayor of Whitecourt. "Rotary Park is the gem of our community and is a popular destination for residents and visitors alike. The extension of the trail system will further enhance the opportunities and experiences for all Rotary Park users.”
“We are proud to partner with the Town of Whitecourt through Alberta Recycling’s Municipal Grant Program,” said Sid Hinton, Chair of Alberta Recycling. “Our $25,000 grant will go towards using recycled materials in conjunction with the Rotary Park trail extension project, which will create a recreational area that can be enjoyed by all residents and visitors in Whitecourt.”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
