Today, Joyce Bateman, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Knox Centre Winnipeg Inc. under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"Our Government is pleased to support infrastructure projects like this one," said MP Bateman. "The Knox Centre is a key facility that provides important programs and services for the people in our community."
The Harper Government's investment of $70,000 will allow the Knox Centre to repair and upgrade the Knox Centre Community kitchen, located in the basement of Knox United Church. This will enable the Centre to continue to provide programs and training initiatives for community groups.
"Funding from the federal government came at a critical point in the development of Knox Community Kitchen," said Natasha Ross, Coordinator, Knox Centre Winnipeg Inc. "Unforeseen costs are perhaps inevitable when renovating a building that is 100 years old, and without support from the federal government our project would have stalled. Because of the generous support, this kitchen will be able to provide the base for new Canadians to develop small businesses and cooperatives, and the community can gather for feasts, cooking lessons and food handling training."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
