Lima, Peru
The Government of Canada is committed to helping promote prosperity in the Americas. To this end, on May 22, 2013, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Canadian support of more than $53 million for new development initiatives in Peru that will help the country take full advantage of its wealth of natural resources and improve basic education for children. The announcement was made in Lima during an official visit by Prime Minister Harper to Peru on May 22, 2013.
The development initiatives in Peru receiving support are:
Improving Environmental Management of Mining and Energy Activities in Peru
Contribution: $15.95 million (2013-2018)
Implementing Partner: Canadian executing agency (to be selected)
The project will help Peru strengthen the effectiveness of environmental impact assessments in the mining and energy sectors, in addition to helping the Ministry of the Environment implement these assessments in compliance with national requirements. The initiative will also help increase the number of annual evaluations of mining operations by Peruvian authorities while reducing duplication.
Promoting Competitiveness and Economic Diversification in Peru’s Extractive Regions
Contribution: $17.4 million (2013-2019)
Implementing Partner: Canadian Cooperation Society for International Development (SOCODEVI)
The project will help agriculture and forestry cooperatives in three extractive regions in Peru (La Libertad, Ancash and Cajamarca) become more self-sufficient and sustainable. It will also help cooperatives increase productivity and profitability by using better farming techniques. Approximately 3,000 family farms belonging to some 30 cooperatives are expected to benefit from this initiative.
Strengthening Natural Resource Management in Key Regions of Peru
Contribution: $4.5 million (2013-2017)
Implementing Partner: Consorcio de Investigación Económica y Social (Consortium for Economic and Social Investigation)
The project will help improve natural resource management practices and support the strengthening of laws, policies and regulations in five of Peru’s regional governments – Piura, La Libertad, Loreto, Arequipa and Cusco. The initiative will also help improve planning and coordination of natural resources management between key central government institutions and regional governments.
Strengthening Management of the Education Sector in Peru
Contribution: $15.5 million (2013-2018)
Implementing Partner: Grupo de Análisis para el Desarrollo (GRADE) (Group for Development Analysis)
The project will help improve basic education for children in Peru – particularly among vulnerable groups such as young girls and children living in rural areas. More specifically, the initiative will help education authorities, particularly the Ministry of Education, deliver quality services more efficiently and effectively based on clear, standardized expectations on school learning outcomes.
Support for all of the initiatives will be provided through the Canadian International Development Agency’s Peru program. This program aims to reduce inequality in economic and education opportunities for excluded populations of Peru, such as indigenous and rural populations, women, children and youth.
