Today, the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport) and Member of Parliament for Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for two projects in Winnipeg under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“Our Government is pleased to support projects across the country like the West Central Women’s Resource Centre and the Manitoba Children’s Museum,” said Minister Fletcher. “Our investments in the renewal of existing infrastructure will benefit Canadian families and communities immediately, helping to support job creation, boosting economic activity, as well as creating safe and accessible facilities for years to come.”
The Harper Government is investing $16,400 to support the West Central Women’s Resource Centre (WCWRC) and $58,950 will go to the Manitoba Children’s Museum. These investments will enhance the services provided by these organizations.
The West Central Women’s Resource Centre strives to empower women to help themselves, their families and their community to live safer, healthier lifestyles. Under this project, the west wall of the facility will be upgraded.
“In order to continue providing services to women in our community, WCWRC depends on having a safe and reliable building to offer programming,” said Shannon Buck, Co-Director, West Central Women’s Resource Centre. “This investment in long-term repair will allow WCWRC to concentrate on offering programming and services to vulnerable populations in the community.”
The Manitoba Children’s Museum provides an interactive learning environment and is a place for children to play, learn and grow. Through this project, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system will be upgraded.
“The Manitoba Children’s Museum is most grateful for the financial assistance through Canada’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund,” said Diane Doth, Executive Director, Manitoba Children’s Museum. “Enabling the replacement of HVAC units may not sound all that exciting, however, support for this project is critical in strengthening our foundation so we can continue to provide opportunities to enrich the lives of children and families in our community.”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
