The Search and Rescue New Initiatives Fund was established by the federal government in 1988 and is managed by the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, on behalf of the Lead Minister for Search and Rescue, in partnership with other federal, provincial and territorial search and rescue organizations.
The Search and Rescue New Initiatives Fund provides annual funding of $8.1 million for new projects that will improve and enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, economy and innovation of search and rescue activities as they relate to the response and prevention objectives of the National Search and Rescue Program.
Potential applicants must contact one of the federal, provincial or territorial Search and Rescue New Initiatives Fund partners to initiate interest in the program and develop proposals that address program and partner priorities and at least one of the five National Search and Rescue Priorities.
All of the proposals for these projects are carefully reviewed and ranked in order of merit. The annual funding for these projects is then distributed in that order and only after the National Search and Rescue Secretariat has fulfilled their funding commitments to ongoing multi-year projects.
The Search and Rescue New Initiatives Fund is the cornerstone of the National Search and Rescue Program and has provided more than $200 million in funding to over 880 projects that have contributed significantly to advancing SAR related technology, improving Canada’s ability to provide prevention programs as well as providing economical and effective SAR response in all areas and jurisdictions across Canada.
