The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today engaged guests of the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies (AIMS) in a dialogue on how best to secure the continued strength of the Canadian economy.
“A good debate can steer us collectively towards making better decisions as new ideas are put forward, considered, challenged and tested,” said Minister Flaherty. “Our Government listened and responded to Canadians on how to safeguard the economy back in the Great Recession in 2008. The advice of Canadians played a significant and constructive role in our nation’s resilience amidst unprecedented challenges.We continue to turn to Canadians for their opinions and insights as we work to ensure a strong, sustainable recovery.”
Topics covered in the AIMS dialogue included:
- Actions to help Aboriginal youth reach their full potential
- Ensuring appropriate support for natural resources development
- How tax policies can be aligned to optimally support economic growth
- The role of transfers to individuals in the Canadian economy
- The broadening and deepening of Canada’s international trade agreements
“In an uncertain global economy, our Government will stick with our low-tax plan for jobs and growth—a plan that has worked and served Canadians well,” said Minister Flaherty. “But advancing this plan will mean continuing to find the best solutions to the challenges we still face.
