Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointment of Mr. Justice Marc Nadon, of the Federal Court of Appeal, to the Supreme Court of Canada.
“Mr. Justice Nadon’s remarkable knowledge of both common and civil law and his wealth of experience as a lawyer, a judge and an arbitrator make him highly qualified to join the illustrious ranks of the Supreme Court of Canada,” said the Prime Minister. “I have every confidence that he will serve with distinction and honour.”
On September 30, 2013, Prime Minister Harper announced Mr. Justice Nadon as the Government’s nominee to replace Mr. Justice Morris Fish, who resigned from the Supreme Court of Canada effective August 31, 2013.
The candidate was highly recommended to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada following comprehensive consultations with the Attorney General of Québec, the Chief Justice of Québec, the Chief Justice of the Québec Superior Court, the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Appeal and the Chief Justice of the Federal Court, as well as representatives of prominent legal organizations, including the Barreau du Québec and the Canadian Bar Association.
Mr. Justice Nadon appeared before an ad hoc committee on October 2, 2013, to answer questions from Members of Parliament.
Mr. Justice Nadon is a recognized expert in maritime and transportation law. From 1993 to 2001, he served as a judge of the Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division and as an ex officio member of the Federal Court of Appeal. In 1994, Mr. Justice Nadon was appointed Judge of the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada and, in 1998, a judicial member of the Competition Tribunal. Prior to his appointment to the Federal Court, Mr. Justice Nadon was a lawyer and partner at Fasken Martineau Walker in Montréal, including a stint in the London, United Kingdom office of that firm. Mr. Justice Nadon has regularly pleaded cases before all levels of Québec and national courts, including the Québec Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
