The theme of this year's World Mental Health Day, Mental Health and Older Adults, reminds us to take a moment and reflect on the importance of mental health and the well-being of seniors around the world. Seniors make a vital contribution to society as parents, grandparents, and community builders. Because Canada's senior population is growing, it is more important than ever to provide support and foster a sense of belonging so seniors can lead healthy and active lives while staying connected to their communities.
The Government of Canada has taken action on a number of fronts to promote mental health and well-being for the benefit of seniors, their families, and medical practitioners. We have established the Mental Health Commission of Canada and have also invested in seniors' mental health by supporting the development of resources such as National Guidelines for Seniors' Mental Health and Mental Health Guides for Seniors and their Families.
In addition, the Public Health Agency of Canada has invested $15 million in the first ever National Population Health Study of Neurological Conditions, which will provide a better picture of the state of neurological conditions in Canada, including Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Furthermore, Health Canada's Home and Community Care Program is working to develop a plan along with First Nations and Inuit groups to complement the program's nursing, personal care, in-home respite, client assessment, and case management services with strategies that address Alzheimer's and related dementias.
It is important that all Canadians learn how to care for their mental health in the same way as they would their physical health. Good mental health is something everyone deserves, including seniors. As Minister of Health, I encourage you on World Mental Health Day to think about investing in your own mental health, as well as how you can support family, friends, and seniors.
Sincerely,
The Honourable Rona Ambrose
Minister of Health
