The opening of the six-lane Southeast Stoney Trail in Calgary paves the way for growth, connecting Albertans to each other and to global markets.

The new 25-kilometre stretch, the third section of Stoney Trail to be constructed, brings the Calgary Ring Road to 70 kilometres in length. Including this new segment, the Alberta government has invested $1.9 billion in Calgary’s ring road, one of many projects which deliver on Alberta Transportation’s Building Alberta commitment.
The Government of Canada contributed $100 million to this southeast portion of the project through the Major Infrastructure Component of the Building Canada plan.

Managed as a P3 – a public-private-partnership, which saves taxpayer dollars and ensures long-term management, the 33-year agreement includes a 30-year maintenance contract. Construction began in 2010.

Serving Calgarians, Albertans and many Canadians who travel through this important north-south, east-west axis, Stoney Trail will improve travel and road safety for motorists, and provide better access for commercial drivers.

The Alberta Government signed a $769 million P3 contract with Chinook Roads Partnership to design, build, operate and partially finance Stoney Trail from 17 Avenue SE to east of Macleod Trail.

By the Numbers
- Nearly 2.5 million man-hours by all construction and office workers since project’s inception
- The same man-hours would build 5,000 1,000-square-foot homes
- 600,000 tonnes of asphalt
- Enough to pave nearly 300,000 average sized driveways
- 5,000 tonnes of rebar
- Equal to the average weight of 1,000 African elephants
- 40,000 cubic metres of concrete
- Enough to fill 70,000 one-tonne pick up trucks
Access to markets
Alberta’s investment in the core infrastructure network includes major ring roads in Calgary and Edmonton, twinning of Highway 43 to Grande Prairie as part of the CANAMEX corridor, and twinning Highway 63 to Fort McMurray, to further connect Alberta communities and businesses to each other and to the world. Over the next three years, Alberta Transportation will invest $9 billion in capital construction and maintenance across the province. The Building Alberta Plan supports strategic infrastructure for current and future growth of Alberta and improved quality of life for Alberta families and communities.
