December 3, 2013
On December 3, 2013, the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, introduced in the House of Commons Bill C-15, Northwest Territories Devolution Act, that will give Northerners greater control over their lands and resources and improve regulatory processes in the North. This historic legislation was developed after many years of consultation with stakeholders, including Aboriginal groups, Northerners, territorial governments and industry.
The bill includes amendments to various statutes which aim to encourage investment in the Northwest Territories while ensuring that resource development proceeds in a sustainable fashion, so that the resulting economic benefits can be enjoyed by future generations.
