Za'atari Refugee Camp, Jordan – 24 January 2014
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the Learning Empowerment and Play project to help support children living in Jordanian communities most affected by the influx of child refugees from Syria. The announcement was made at the Za'atari Refugee Camp in Jordan, during the Prime Minister's first official visit to the Middle East, from January 18–25, 2014.
As a result of the influx of child refugees from Syria, Jordanian host communities are delivering basic education services to more children than ever before.
The project will focus on providing education support to child refugees and Jordanian children and youth through the training of more than 1,500 teachers and coaches, using an innovative play-based learning methodology. It will also serve to improve the learning environment for participating children and youth, increase their participation in leadership roles within school and community settings, and rehabilitate classrooms, sanitation facilities, and play spaces.
