Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement congratulating Denny Morrison on his silver medal in the men’s 1000m speed skating:
“Today, I join all Canadians in congratulating Denny Morrison on his outstanding performance in the men’s 1000m speed skating. This medal is a true testament to his passion, dedication and commitment to sport, and all Canadians are immensely proud.
“What makes this victory even more special is that his teammate Gilmore Junio stepped aside to let him compete. It is stories of sportsmanship and camaraderie such as these that make our nation very proud.”
Denny Morrison was born in Chetwynd, British Columbia, and currently resides in Calgary, Alberta. This is his third Olympic medal in his third Olympic Games, having won a gold medal in the men’s team pursuit in Vancouver in 2010, and a silver medal in the men’s team pursuit in Turin in 2006. This is his first individual Olympic medal. He is also a two-time World Champion (2008 and 2012) in the 1500m at the ISU World Single Distances Championships.
