March 21, 2014—The Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State (Social Development), today issued the following statement in recognition of World Down Syndrome Day:
“Today, our government recognizes the strengths and accomplishments of those around us who have Down syndrome.
People with Down syndrome, among others with disabilities, can and do make a significant contribution to the economy and are untapped talent pools in Canada. According to the Canadian Down Syndrome Society, there are an estimated 35,000 Canadians with Down syndrome. They face unique barriers to employment despite being willing and capable of participating in our labour market.
Our government is committed to removing barriers and creating more inclusive and accessible communities and workplaces for Canadians with disabilities.
To further ensure the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the labour force, including those with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities, Economic Action Plan 2014 proposes to connect persons with disabilities with jobs by providing $15 million over three years to the Canadian Association for Community Living’s Ready, Willing & Able initiative.”
