May 4, 2014 - Ottawa, Ont.
Today, Sunday, May 4, Canadians from across the country gathered to commemorate the sacrifices made by those thousands of Canadians who fought so valiantly during the Battle of the Atlantic, which ran from 1939 to 1945.
“It is an honour for me to extend Canada’s sincere appreciation to our veterans, for a hard-fought victory in one of the most important campaigns of the Second World War. The service and sacrifice of these Canadians helped to win the war and lay the foundations for our modern and prosperous Canada.”
Honourable Rob Nicholson, PC, QC, MP for Niagara Falls and Minister of National Defence.
“Canadians made a remarkable difference in the Battle of the Atlantic. The men and women who took part - at sea, in the air, and in the shipyards - helped make Canada one of the foremost Allied powers in bringing peace and freedom to Europe. Today, we honour their legacy, share their stories, and remember their sacrifices.”
Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs.
“On this day we are reminded of the constant dangers inherent in a life at sea. Throughout our history, our sailors rise to the occasion to adapt and overcome any situation with the same professionalism and strength of character they demonstrated all those long years ago.”
