Local communities benefiting from infrastructure funding that upgraded community facilities

The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), and the Honourable Steve Kent, provincial Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced federal and provincial investments totaling more than $480,000 for communities across Newfoundland and Labrador. This funding supported improvements to eight key pieces of community infrastructure.
The Towns of Glenwood, Glovertown, Gambo, Harbour Breton, Grand Falls-Windsor and Robert’s Arm, as well as the Cape Freels Heritage Trust and the Harbour Breton Recreation Corporation, have completed necessary upgrades to their community facilities to better serve the needs of residents and visitors.

- The Government of Canada invested a total of $340,983 in these eight projects through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador invested $139,030.
- The Town of Glenwood received $3,665 (federal) to upgrade the existing ball field, including the installation of a fence around the perimeter, new dugouts and backstop as well as general field upgrades.
- The Town of Glovertown received $17,911 (federal) to upgrade the Ken Diamond Memorial Park, particularly the park’s hiking trail. The improvements included resurfacing the trail, improved signage, enhancements to the park entrance, replacement of park benches and repairs to the look-outs.
- The Town of Gambo received $31,298 (federal) to upgrade the existing community centre and library. The community centre upgrades involved improvements to the plumbing, replacement of the roof, new siding as well as replacement of drywall in various locations throughout the building. Library improvements included electrical upgrades, wheelchair ramps, new lighting as well as washroom upgrades.
- The Cape Freels Heritage Trust Inc. received $6,663 (federal) to upgrade an existing tourist attraction known as the Greenspond Courthouse to improve the overall appeal of the facility and further preserve this historic building. Upgrades included new windows and doors.
- The Town of Harbour Breton received $4,593 (federal) to improve the town’s fire hall. This project involved raising the ceiling of the hall to provide necessary space to house a new fire truck.
- The Town of Robert’s Arm received $76,100 (federal) and $128,630 (provincial) to construct a bridge at Tommy’s Arm to complete the loop of Hazelwood Walking and Hiking Trail.
- The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor received $194,108 (federal) to renovate and upgrade the existing soccer facilities at the Centennial Field Complex.
- The Harbour Breton Recreation Corporation received $6,645 (federal) and $10,400 (provincial) to upgrade the existing arena, including repairs to the roof, wheelchair lift and compressor.
- Through Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government of Canada helped modernize Canada’s infrastructure by committing $150 million over two years for the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
- ACOA has been delivering the CIIF in Atlantic Canada with an allocation of $16.6 million, of which $3,864,000 was allotted to projects in Newfoundland and Labrador.
