Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement after learning that Justice Louis LeBel will retire on November 30, 2014:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to extend my deep gratitude to Justice LeBel for his three decades of service as a judge, including more than 14 years on the Supreme Court of Canada. His exemplary dedication to the law and his distinguished service to Canada will be long remembered.
“I wish Justice LeBel the very best in his well-deserved retirement.
“Plans to fill the resulting vacancy on the Supreme Court of Canada will be announced in due course.”
