Following a public hearing, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced today its decision to issue a Class 1B Nuclear Substance Processing Facility Operating Licence to Best Theratronics Ltd. (BTL). The licence will be valid from July 1, 2014, until June 30, 2019.
In making its decision, the Commission considered information presented at a May 8, 2014, public hearing in Ottawa, Ontario. During the public hearing, the Commission considered submissions from BTL and one intervenor, as well as CNSC staff’s recommendations.
The Commission concluded that BTL is qualified to carry out the activity that the licence will authorize. The Commission is of the opinion that BTL, in carrying out that activity, will make adequate provision for the protection of the environment, the health and safety of persons and the maintenance of national security measures required to implement international obligations to which Canada has agreed. CNSC staff shall provide the Commission with annual reports on BTL’s performance, as part of the CNSC’s annual performance reporting process for uranium and nuclear substance processing facilities.
