June 13, 2014 – Montreal – National Film Board of Canada
This summer, the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) will be part of the line-up of free outdoor screenings at Place de la Paix (also known as Peace Park), presented by the Société des arts technologiques (SAT) and the Quartier des Spectacles in association with the Montreal borough of Ville-Marie.
Quick Facts
On Tuesday, July 15, at 9 p.m., Danic Champoux's documentary feature Autoportrait sans moi (Self(less) Portrait), produced by the NFB (Colette Loumède), returns to Montreal after opening in theatres in March and screening at Toronto's prestigious Hot Docs festival in the spring. This documentary journey takes the form of a human mosaic, in which 50 people open up about their personal lives on camera, holding a mirror up to society in the process. Screening in its original French version, Autoportrait sans moi will be preceded by the trailer for the NFB's 75th anniversary and followed by a talk with the filmmaker.
On Saturday, July 12, at 9 p.m., the McLaren à la belle étoile program will mark the hundredth-year anniversary of the birth of animation pioneer Norman McLaren. The selection will feature 12 of his short films, including his Oscar-winning classic Neighbours. Presented by Fantasia in association with the NFB, the SAT and local daily 24 heures as part of Fantasia à la belle étoile/Fantasia under the Stars.
• Synopsis – Autoportrait sans moi
In an age of social media, when the boundaries between private and public are constantly being redrawn, 50 people share some of their most intimate experiences and thoughts on camera. The film offers a complex patchwork of intertwining themes, ultimately reflecting a collective spirit we can all identify with. Taken as a whole, these confessions—sometimes sombre, sometimes funny—compose a rich and fragmented plotline, a human mosaic that slowly takes shape in front of our very eyes, telling a story: our story.
• Biography – Danic Champoux
Danic first received acclaim for his work on the 1996–1997 season of the TV show La Course destination monde, which featured many young Quebec filmmakers. He followed up with a number of successful projects, including the award-winning and critically acclaimed documentaries Mon père (2000), Caporal Mark (2006), La couleur du temps (2008) and Baklava Blues (2009). In 2011 and 2012, Danic moved from strength to strength, making Mom and Me, an animated film about a boy's fascination with the Hells Angels, and Sessions, a Direct Cinema-style feature doc about an oncology centre. His most recent film, Autoportrait sans moi, was produced as part of the NFB's Filmmaker-in-Residence program.
