As part of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) routine testing of various food products, a report released today found that 99.3 per cent of the milk alternative products tested contained no milk protein.
Two of the 278 samples were found to have detectable levels of undeclared milk protein. As these two products were already part of an ongoing food safety investigation and had been recalled, no further action was required by the CFIA.
Milk alternative products are marketed for a specific population that wishes to refrain from consuming milk protein. The presence of undeclared milk in a food is not a health concern for the vast majority of consumers however; undeclared allergens may represent a serious or life threatening health risk for allergic or sensitive individuals.
