Investments support continued growth in cultural tourism

Cultural and community groups on the Bonavista Peninsula are partnering to help build the craft sector and strengthen cultural tourism in the region with support from the federal and provincial governments.
The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), and the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, today announced funding totaling close to $121,000 for the Trinity Historical Society, which will work with several organizations to advance the sustainable development of the region’s tourism industry.
The project involves various initiatives to improve the development of craft products and enhance the cultural experience for tourists. The focus will be on three areas: developing new experienced-based visitor programs; professional development and training for craft producers and; marketing and promotion. The new experienced-based programs will include workshops, demonstrations and activities that will engage tourists in the creation of different crafts, such as jewelry, pottery, knitting and rug-hooking.

- The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, is investing $60,498 in the project. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is contributing the same amount through the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development.
- Project partners include: Trinity Historical Society, Cape Random Trust/Random Passage, Tourism Elliston, Sir William Ford Coaker Heritage Foundation and the Bonaventure to English Harbour Development Association.
- The Trinity Historical Society was established in 1964 to promote and preserve the historic resources, heritage and history of Trinity and its surrounding communities.
- The organization, which has approximately 120 members and is governed by a volunteer board of directors, operates the Trinity Museum, Trinity Historical Society Archives Court House, Gaol and General Building, Lester-Garland House, Green Family Forge, the Cooperage and Fort Point.
- The Bonavista Peninsula is home to several historic and cultural attractions, including the Random Passage site, Rising Tide Theatre, Ryan Premises National Historic Site, Cape Bonavista Lighthouse and the Sir William Coaker Historic Site.
