On June 22, 2014, a previously deported mother and son arrived at the Cornwall port of entry via local taxi service from the United States. During background checks, border services officers determined that Gizella Bodi, 42, and her son, Ignac Balogh, 19, had been previously deported and placed them under arrest for returning to Canada without authorization.
The pair had previously made a refugee protection claim in October 2010 in Vancouver, which was later denied, and they were deported from Canada in December 2012. The pair returned to Canada in July 2013 without written authorization and were consequently deported a second time.
On June 30, 2014, both pled guilty to entering Canada without consent under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and were sentenced to 30 days in jail, including time already served.
They will be deported upon completion of the jail sentence.
